How to register as a fuel
producer
Correspondence
with Government Ministers, Departments, and
PoliticiansWhen we first started experimenting with bio-diesel, it was tempting to make our own fuel and also use it without notifying HM Customs & Excise. This would have meant we could drive our car at a fraction of the cost of buying mineral diesel from the pumps. Just imagine it! - driving about the country at a cost of about 5p per liter, amy be even less! But it would also have been breaking the law.
Our primary motivation in pursuing this project are the long term environmental benefits. It is not to beat the government and get cheaper motoring. In our view the higher the rates of taxation on the use of private vehicles and lorries the better. We want to encourage sustainable local economies in which local needs can be met as far as possible from local resources. Cheap transport makes paves the way for the multinationals to compete against local shops and local producers. But to achieve anything useful, we will need a large number of people to change their consumption from mineral fuels to renewable organic fuels, (as well as being able to use their cars less). To achieve this we needed to be a legitimate above board tax paying and collecting outfit. To make, use or sell bio-diesel without registering for tax purposes could bring the whole potential market for renewable organic fuels into disrepute. Our aim is to encourage and facilitate public confidence in this alternative form of fuel. We must therefore be totally legitimate and above board.
As soon as our initial kitchen sink experiments proved that making bio-diesel is viable, and the fuel was effective, we decided to register with HM C&E. The process is not complicated, but there may be some delay in getting the necessary forms. For that reason we have published all the forms so you can download them and register at once.
Just after we registered, we received a surprise visit by officers from HM C&E. But they were not sent by the registration department but by enforcement. Click here to read the whole story.
