The bio-power network
There are now over 200 people or organisations setting up to make bio-fuels as part of the bio-power network. Many will soon be providing fuel to customers in their local area. Each local bio-power company is a member of Bio-power (UK), and the members elect their board of directors. This bottom up company format is the opposite of the power and profit seeking top down structure of the multi-nationals. Bio-power network is very much more than just a new way of making bio-fuels.
If you are interested in setting up to produce our form of bio-fuel on a commercial basis then send an e-mail with your name, full postal address and telephone number with a request to join the bio-power mailing list. You will then receive a e-mail circular every few weeks with details of the bio-power programme of events. This includes Introductory Seminars, and further Technical Courses for people who will be setting up to make fuel in their local area. In the summer we are also planning a series of Bio-energy Conferences in Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.
The practical aims of the network are described as follows:
Our shared commercial aim is to proved real alternatives to the use of fossil fuels. By 'real' we mean fuels that can be used in the same way as mineral fuels, wihout making any radical changes to the vehicle, and available at competitive prices to normal diesel. Our aim is to sell Bio-power fuels at between 5p and 10p cheaper than the current price of mineral fuel. We therefore provide a range of fuels in which the materials used are:-
- Carbon neutral - the hydro carbon content is not derived from fossil sources or through the petrochemical industry
- Renewable - the materials used are infinitely replaceable
- Organic - the materials used are derived from recently living matter
- Derived from used or waste sources where possible - so as to protect the availability of new or virgin stocks
In addition, the fuel itself must be:-
- Bio-degradable - must be absorbed into the environment by enzymes or microbic activity if spilled
- Non-Toxic - must not cause harm to the environment if spilled or absorbed
- Low in exhaust gas emissions - must be comparable with or better than the use of mineral fuels.
- Interchangeable with normal derv or ULSD - it must be possible to mix the fuel with derv and run it in a vehicle in exactly the same way as derv.
We believe that as well as producing new and revolutionary forms of fuel to address the environmental problems blamed upon the use of fossil fuels, there is also a need to develop better ways of working, totally unlike the world of business which created the large, greedy, profit motivated multi-national companies that got us all into this mess in the first place.
Instead of a relatively few powerful multi-national companies, whose policies are controlled by their directors and shareholders, we wish to develop a much more accountable and 'bottom up' form of business structure to foster and apply the widespread use of the technology we have so far developed. This way, we can both address the issue of Global Warming, and also bring real benefit to our customers, our workers and staff, our supporters, and collaborators, and also those who supply us with their waste materials.
To this end we seek to:-
- work co-operatively with those who share our stated ethical aims
- help others to set up collecting fats and making fuel to meet local needs
- establish and nurture a network of bio-fuel makers, all of whom are pledged to work non-competitively and co-operatively in pursuance of shared aims
- encourage a better way of working with people that does not cause industrial strife, an 'us and them' mind set, or any feeling of exploitation of people or of the earth's resources. To this end, we hope to encourage co-operatives, worker ownership, and a stake-holder commitment to our work in making bio-fuels
- ensure that everyone benefits from our work, not just those engaged or employed in the production or distribution of the fuels, but also our suppliers, and our customers.
All members of the bio-power group of companies are required to make a commitment to the stated ethical aims as set out in the bio-power charter.
